What We Do

Sheryl Woodward - SLE

After achieving a BA Hons degree in Art and Design with QTS from York St John University in 1999. I have taught for 17 years across both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Currently I am a senior leader and KS2 teacher (in a large Year 3 - Year 6 class) at an OFSTED and SIAMs rated ‘outstanding' North Yorkshire Church of England School. I regularly work closely alongside the KS1 teacher, where we share responsibility as ‘Curriculum and Pedagogy’ leader and concentrate on driving up the quality of teaching and learning across the whole school.

Areas of Expertise:

  • Cross curricular planning
  • Mixed age planning and teaching
  • Primary Maths Specialist teacher
  • Personalised learning in KS2 classroom
  • Use of iPads across the curriculum
  • Forest Schools

Example(s) of outreach work undertaken and impact

Completing the Maths Specialist Leader Course at Sheffield Hallam University impacted both on my own practice, across my own school and other cluster schools by enabling others to see the importance of the enjoyment, excitement and enrichment of Maths for all children. In turn this has led us to developing an outstanding curriculum that celebrates Maths both in its own right and across other subjects. Over the years, as a Maths Specialist Leader, I have supported other primary schools and leaders to improve their curriculum, pedagogy and practice.

Because of the motivation created by the Mathematics Specialist leader qualification this has led us in collaborating further to develop a challenging outdoor based curriculum for all pupils across the school where possible. Now staff feel confident in planning curriculum sessions outdoors for a variety of subjects and feel that four walls should not define a classroom or learning opportunity. Further down the line this has led to the importance of developing Forest schools as an intrinsic part of our weekly curriculum. This has promoted pupil independence, resilience and ownership of learning, developing each child as a confident, effective and reflective learner for life.

Staff and pupils, on occasion up to 50 pupils, from other schools visit our regular weekly forest school sessions. I am keen to support the staff and show them the benefits that these sessions have to offer all pupils. These sessions take place on school grounds as well as in the local woodland, which benefit the staff by practically showing them how they can use similar resources and facilities in their own schools.
